This book is set sometime after the events of In the Forest of the Night and the main character, Jessica, was mentioned in passing by Risika in the previous book. Rejecting Caryn and remaining warily intrigued by Alex, Jessica becomes more and more confused as Alex displays many mannerisms of the vampire from her dreams, and is shocked at the revelation that Alex knows that she is in fact Ash Night following a confrontation with Caryn at a bookstore.

She starts walking and she can no longer hide the fact that everything is real. Why did Alex out of the blue decide to move to Ramsa, why does he hold such a strong profound hatred towards Caryn, and more importantly what happens when everything is revealed? In this book, he is the dangerous love interest, and we see that he is not as inhuman as he would like to believe.
I mean, I hardly have enough self-control to finish one book. That all sounds well and good, but there was so much speculation on Jessica’s part that it still came through as theory as she was trying to figure everything out.

Jessica is under no illusion that she is completely safe with him, and she knows the other vampires are out to kill her or those around her if they cannot get to Jessica. It’s a novel written about a condescending, angst-ridden year-old by a condescending, angst-ridden year-old, and it fails to bring anything meaningful to the state of being a condescending, angst-ridden year-old.
